Vidya Bharati Vivekanand Vidya Vikas Parishad held its Annual Function on September 3, 2026, at the Vivekananda Hall of the Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture in Golpark, Kolkata, bringing together senior state leadership, organisational office-bearers and educators to mark the year's academic milestones and outline plans for expansion across West Bengal.

Chief Minister's Commitment to Expansion

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, attending as chief guest, used his address to announce a target of scaling Vidya Bharati's presence in Bengal to 1,000 schools within a year, with quality Vidya Mandir infrastructure envisioned in every town, panchayat, sub-division and district headquarters up to Class 12. He also spoke of plans to sanction additional Sainik Schools for the state and to permit National Cadet Corps (NCC) units in every school and college. Referencing steps already taken by his government, he cited the adoption of the National Education Policy, making the singing of Vande Mataram mandatory during school prayers, and handing over Kolkata's mid-day meal programme to ISKCON. He also expressed support for popularising Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar's vision for women's education, aligning his remarks with the philosophies of Swami Vivekananda.

Academic Performance Takes Centre Stage

Ravindra Chamaria, National Committee Member of Vidya Bharati Akhil Bhartiya Shiksha Sansthan, presented figures from this year's Madhyamik examinations, noting that of roughly 9.6 lakh students who appeared across Bengal, 1,225 were from Vidya Bharati schools. Of the state's 131 rank-holders, 13 belonged to Vidya Bharati institutions — around 10 percent of all top performers — while no student from the organisation's Bengal schools failed. He identified the state's first and second rank-holders as coming from Vidya Bharati schools in Raiganj, Uttar Dinajpur, and Paikpara, Birbhum, respectively.

Growth in Teachers, Projects and Global Alumni Reach

Chamaria also detailed the organisation's growth over the past decade, noting that its teaching staff in Bengal had grown from about 3,310 in 2016 to 4,720 currently. Between 2016 and 2026, 178 infrastructure projects were completed with donor support, and 15 more are currently underway. He pointed to Vidya Bharati's global alumni network, which now counts more than 10.8 lakh registered former students spread across 93 countries, describing it as one of the most extensive alumni portals of its kind.

A Movement With Roots Dating to 1952

Vidya Bharati traces its origins to 1952, when the first Saraswati Shishu Mandir was established in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. The organisation was formally constituted as a national body in 1977, with its registered office in Lucknow and functional headquarters in Delhi. It now operates over 12,000 schools nationwide, educating more than 33 lakh students, with over 85 percent of its secondary schools reporting a 100 percent pass record. In West Bengal specifically, the network has grown to 313 schools serving approximately 1.2 lakh students.

Event Proceedings

The programme began at 11:00 AM with keynote addresses, cultural presentations and discussions on expanding educational outreach, and concluded at 1:30 PM, followed by a community lunch for attendees. Senior Executive Committee members Rajendra Prasad Khaitan, Bhagawati Prasad Jalan and Govinda Chandra Mahant were also present on stage, alongside Yatindra Sharma, Akhil Bharatiya Sah Sangathan Mantri of Vidya Bharati, who addressed the gathering on the organisation's academic vision.
